For clear vision, the eye's cornea and lens must bend (refraction) the light rays properly. This allows images to be focused on the retina. Otherwise, the images will be blurry.

Laser Eye Lens Surgery

This blurriness is called "refractive error". It is caused by a mismatch between the shape (curvature) of the cornea and the length of the eye.

LASIK uses an excimer laser (an ultraviolet laser) to remove a thin layer of corneal tissue. It gives a new shape to the cornea so that the light rays are clearly focused on the retina. LASIK causes the cornea to become thinner.

LASIK is an outpatient surgical procedure. It will take 10 to 15 minutes to perform for each eye.

The only anesthetic used is eye drops which numb the surface of the eye. The procedure is done while you are awake, but you will get medicine to help you relax. LASIK can be done on one or both eyes during the same session.

To perform the procedure, a flap of corneal tissue is created. This flap is then peeled back so that the excimer laser can reshape the corneal tissue below. The hinge on the flap prevents it from completely separating from the cornea.

When LASIK was first performed, a special automatic knife (a microkeratome) was used to cut the flap. Now, a more common and safer method is to use a different type of laser (femtosecond) to create a corneal flap.

The amount of corneal tissue to be removed by the laser is calculated ahead of time. The surgeon will calculate this based on several factors, including:

• a wavefront test, which measures how light passes through your eye
• the shape of the surface of your cornea
• Once reshaped, the surgeon replaces and secures the flap. No stitches are needed. The cornea will naturally hold the flap in place.

LASIK is often performed on people who use glasses or contact lenses because of nearsightedness (myopia). It is sometimes used to correct farsightedness. It can also correct astigmatism.

The FDA and the American Academy of Ophthalmology have developed guidelines for prescribing LASIK candidates.

You must be at least 18 years of age (21 in some cases, depending on the laser used). This is because vision changes can persist in people under the age of 18. Before The Laser Eye Surgery Procedure

You may have burning, itching, or a feeling that something is in the eye. In most cases, this feeling does not last more than 6 hours.

A small number of people may need to have a second surgery because vision is lost or less accurate. Sometimes, you will still need to wear contact lenses or glasses.

Some people need a second surgery to get the best possible result. Although second surgery can improve farsightedness, it cannot relieve other symptoms, such as glare, aura, or problems with driving at night. These are common complaints after LASIK surgery, especially when an older method is used. In most cases, these problems will go away after 6 months of surgery. However, the problem of glare may persist for a small number of people.

If your farsightedness has been corrected with LASIK, chances are you will still need reading glasses at around age 45.
